Hate and threats in academia

For students and the general public

In 2025, the Faculty of Social Sciences will organise three seminars where we discuss issues of research, education and public discourse from different perspectives. The seminar series is primarily aimed at staff and students at the Faculty of Social Sciences but is open to all interested parties.

Seminar
Date
26 Nov 2025
Time
13:15 - 14:45

Organizer
Faculty of Social Sciences

The third seminar focuses on hate and intimidation in academia. Some issues are more likely than others to result in teachers and researchers being subjected to hate and intimidation. In addition, an increasingly polarised social climate contributes to increasing the phenomenon. Examples include threatening or abusive emails or posts on social media, but also threatening situations in classrooms or between colleagues. How do teachers and researchers deal with hate and threats? What can management do to support teachers and researchers who are victimised? What are the consequences of teachers and researchers being subjected to hate and threats and how can it ultimately affect education, research and participation in the public debate?
