Babeș-Bolyai University (UBB) is located in the city of Cluj-Napoca, which is the largest city in Transylvania in western Romania. It is a proper student city with lots of activities, with a student population of 100 000 in comparison with its 500 000 inhabitants.
UBB is the largest and oldest university establishment in Romania and was founded in 1581. It is the only Romanian university ranked in the Shanghai World University Rankings 2022. There is a large student population at UBB with approximately 55 000 students at all levels. It is an international university and one of the most popular destinations in Europe for Erasmus+ exchange students.

Babes-Bolyai University (UBB) has a wide offer of courses for exchange students. Make sure to carefully check the course offer in English and the ability to transfer the credits before you apply.
More information about courses available can be found at the bottom of the page on this link (please note that the information is frequently updated).
We recommend that you choose seven courses that you can consider taking in your course selection (you will study five courses). You will be nominated to one faculty and it is possible to study no more than two courses from one other faculty. Please note that there is a limited amount of courses offered in English.
Important information:
- There are no courses offered in the artistic subject areas (except theatre and film at Masters level, see below).
- Faculty of Theatre and Film - courses are available in English at Masters level
- Faculty of Geography - courses taught in English are only available as "tutorials"
- Faculty of Chemistry - welcomes students from all levels however courses taught in English are only at Masters level
- Faculty of Biology and Geology - courses are available in English at Masters level
- Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering -
- Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences - Faculty of Pscyhology and Education Sciences – courses in education sciences are not taught in English.
- Faculty of Sociology and Social Work - not open for exchange students
Erasmus+ grant
Romania is part of the Erasmus+ programme – which means that you can receive an Erasmus+grant if you do an exchange period at UBB.

Language Requirements
English at B2 level. When you submit your application you will simultaneously complete an OLS (online language assessment) through Erasmus+.
Housing
Student housing is available at UBB. To apply for a room in their housing you will need to show interest at the time of application (no later than 15 July or 15 November). More information about the housing options can be found here.
