Examination in the common exam halls

You must register for your exam in advance and you always register according to instructions from your department. This is usually done in Ladok.

As a student, you are obliged to follow the rules for examinations that apply at the University of Gothenburg. The rules apply to all types of examinations and there is a special section for written exams in an exam hall, which applies regardless of whether you write the exam in the University's common exam halls or in an exam hall at the department. If you break the rules in any way during the exam, the invigilators may need to report this to the examiner.

You must be able to prove your identity by presenting a valid photo ID (such as passport or driving licence). You must be able to show your face to the invigilator for secure identification.

Please note that GU cards, residence permit cards from the Swedish Migration Agency and digital IDs are not valid ID documents for exams.

• You should bring a pencil and eraser - even if you are writing a DISA exam, it is good to be able to take notes.
• You can bring food and drink, but keep in mind that everything on your desk must be visible. The invigilators will check everything on the desk, so help by making it easy to see what you have on the desk.

• You are not allowed to bring your own scrap paper – it is available in the exam hall once the exam has started.
• You are not allowed to bring anything containing nuts or peanuts into the exam hall.
• The exam hall should be a perfume-free zone.

• If you are writing a paper exam, prepare by bringing pencils and erasers. The exam paper is handed out when the writing time begins. 

The University of Gothenburg's common exam halls are located at three different addresses. You will receive information from your department about which address you should write your exam at.

Find the University's common exam halls

To write a DISA exam, you need a computer that fulfils certain requirements. You can use a PC (Windows) or a Mac. Please note that Chromebooks, tablets or mobile phones cannot be used for the DISA exam.

Make sure that the operating system on your PC or Mac is of the correct version.

If you do not have a computer that works with DISA, you are welcome to book a loan computer. Read more under Do you need to borrow a computer?

The University of Gothenburg uses a lockdown browser called Safe Exam Browser (SEB). The lockdown browser is launched when you open your exam and ensures that the only thing you can do on your computer is write your exam. When you submit and close the lockdown browser, your computer works as usual again.

Download and install the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) for your DISA exam. You do not need to configure SEB – the configuration is done automatically when you start your exam.

We recommend that you use the latest authorised version of SEB for your operating system. You can find the approved versions and download SEB at the following link:

Make sure you can connect to the eduroam wireless network. If you can't get in, you may need to update your certificate.

Wifi – eduroam

You must log in to your student account if you are writing a DISA exam. Many people have their login details automatically saved on their computer, but in case you need to log in again, it is important that you know or have access to your username and password.

If you lack a compatible computer for a DISA exam you can book a computer to borrow. A booking is confirmed directly on the booking page. No automated emails to confirm or remind are sent. The University cannot book a computer on your behalf.

You can log in to TimeEdit to see your upcoming bookings and you can cancel your booking if you are no longer in need of a loan computer. Remember to read the instructions for booking on the TimeEdit page.

Book computer via TimeEdit

The booking must be done no later than five working days prior to the digital exam. No late bookings are accepted. If you have booked a computer to borrow, you will collect it at the computer support desk in the exam hall.

Safe Exam Browser is installed on the University of Gothenburg's computers. You will need the credentials for your student account to connect to eduroam and to log in to the DISA system when taking your exam. Please make sure that you either know your login details or bring them to the exam hall.

Inside the front door you will find a foyer, which leads to the exam hall.

Both the front door and the door to the exam hall open 45 minutes before the exam starts. It is important that you arrive in good time. The ID check takes place when you enter the exam hall in which you will write your exam, and there may be many students entering the same room.

• If you are writing a DISA exam, you must be in place at least 30 minutes before the exam starts.
• If you are writing a paper exam, you must be in place at least 15 minutes before the exam starts.

The exam hall doors close when the writing time starts. If you arrive at the exam hall after the writing time has started, you will not be allowed to write your exam.

There are notices in the foyer indicating which exams are held during the day. The notices show course name, course code, time and department. The notices also state which exam hall, known as section, you will write your exam in. Do as follows:

• Start by finding your exam on the notice board.
• Go to the right section and get your ID.
• Walk up to the invigilator inside the door to the section to get your ID checked. The invigilator will give you your seat number.
• Go to the seat corresponding to the number you have been assigned. If you need help finding your seat, ask an invigilator.

Once you have found your seat, you should place the items you need for your exam on the desk. Your identification needs to be visible on the bench throughout the exam.

Place outerwear, bags, computer cases and pencil cases on the hooks along the walls. Caps, hats and shoes should either be worn or placed on the hooks along the walls. No items of clothing should be left on the floor or on your bench. You cannot have anything in your pockets. Small valuables such as wallets and keys can be placed on the floor under your desk.

Switch off all digital devices, such as mobile phones, smart watches and activity bands, and put them in your bag or jacket by the hooks, or on the floor under your desk. If you have an analogue watch, take it off and place it on the floor or in your bag or jacket.

Listen carefully to the information read out over the loudspeakers. This includes information on the rules of behaviour in the hall and on escape routes.

If you are writing a DISA exam, prepare yourself by following the instructions posted on the desk. Here is a summary of the instructions:

Start by connecting your computer to the eduroam wireless network. Then you should:

• Close down active programmes, such as Spotify or Steam
• Open a browser and go to gu.inspera.no (login to DISA)
• Log in with your student account
• Select your exam and follow the instructions on the screen. To open the exam, you will need to enter a password. The invigilator will read the password in connection with the review of the rules.

Bring your computer to the computer support desk if you need help.

If you are writing a paper exam, prepare yourself by taking out a pencil and an eraser. The exam will be handed out when the writing time starts.

Once the exam has started, the invigilators will place scrap paper in various places in the hall for you to pick up whenever you need it during the exam.

At the beginning of the exam, the invigilators go around and check that you are sitting in the right place and that you do not have anything unauthorised at your desk. If you're writing a paper exam with a Ladok code, you will also receive your anonymous code from the invigilator.

You may submit your exam no earlier than 45 minutes after the writing time has started. You must therefore remain at your desk for at least 45 minutes, even if you intend to hand in a blank exam. If you have an urgent need to leave the exam hall, call the invigilator by raising your hand. The invigilator will then come and tell you what to do. This is important to maintain order in the exam hall.

The toilets open after 45 minutes. If you need to go to the toilet, take your ID to the invigilator at the toilets and write your name on the list. The invigilator will write down the entry and exit times.

During the exam, the invigilators are there to keep order in the hall and to, for example, help if something is not working properly. The invigilators cannot help with any questions about the content of the exam. If the invigilators suspect deviation from the rules, they will report this to the examiner.

When you have finished a DISA exam and want to submit it, you should first call the invigilator by raising your hand. The invigilator will perform an ID check. After this, click on Submit now in DISA and then exit the lockdown browser.

When you have finished a paper exam, take the exam and your ID to the submission desk. Then go back to your seat and collect your items.

Remember that you are not allowed to talk until you have left the exam hall. Toilet visits after submitting your exam are made in the foyer.

When your DISA exam has been assessed your department will publish the exam for you in DISA.

Log in to DISA and click on File: Login to DISA. You can log in with a computer, tablet or phone.

• View submitted answer – here you see your exam as it was when you were writing it. On the last page there is a summary with your total score and score per question.
• Download – here you can download your exam as a pdf. The pdf includes the exam questions, your answers and a summary of your score per question.
• Feedback – if the teacher has left comments on your answers, you will find the comments here.

If you want to delete your exam from DISA you can sign it out. It is not possible to recreate a signed-out exam. If you want to save your exam, you must first download it as a pdf before signing it out.
