Scholarships at the University of Gothenburg

On this page you will find scholarships that are administered by the University of Gothenburg aimed at those who study at the University.

Some scholarships can be applied for by all students and some scholarships can only be applied for by students studying a certain field of study. There may be additional requirements for eligibility, for example where you live or your hometown.

How to apply

The rules for eligibility, application, selection and decision differ between the scholarships. How to apply and other important information can be found at the respective scholarship. The application is usually made via Gothenburg University's scholarship application system.

General scholarships

The general scholarships are aimed at all students at the University, regardless of subject area.

The Adlerbert Foreign Student Hospitality Foundation

As an international student at the University of Gothenburg, you can apply for a scholarship from the Adlerbert Scholarships Foundation. The scholarship is a one-time payment and its amount varies, in recent years it has been between 4,000 and 5,000 SEK per scholarship.

Adlerbert scholarships

The University of Gothenburg allocates annual funds from the Adlerbert Foundations to award scholarships to bachelor’s or master’s students. You can apply for a scholarship of 15,000 SEK for either study trips or living expenses during your studies, with priority given to travel.

Application period: The 2024 application was open from 2 September to 27 September.

The Foundation Bergliot Kihlberg Anderson (students from Lysekil, Sweden)

The The Foundation Bergliot Kihlberg Anderson is founded to promote students from Lysekil, Sweden, studying at undergraduate or graduate level at the University of Gothenburg. The scholarship is currently 15,000 SEK.

Application period: 18 August - 19 September 2025

The Evenson foundation (students with a connection to the province of Värmland)

The foundation awards scholarships to students with a connection to the province of Värmland who are studying at the University of Gothenburg.

Application period: 1 October - 31 October 2025

University of Gothenburg’s Student Fund

Students at the University of Gothenburg can apply for grants to improve the social student life, promote good student health, strengthen cohesion between student groups, create a sense of community across study areas, and increase the attractiveness of the University and Gothenburg.

Application period: The 2024 application was open from 1 October to 30 October 2024

Scholarships tied to a faculty/subject areas

Scholarships tied to a specific subject area can only be applied for by students within that subject area or within a specific faculty. Scroll down the page to Information from faculties and departments to see if there are scholarships available in your field of study.

Scholarships for students at a "philosophical faculty"

The University of Gothenburg traces its origins to the Gothenburg University College, which consisted of the philosophical faculties. Scholarships are still granted to students studying at "philosophical faculties" at the University of Gothenburg, through foundations established during the College's time. This covers departments that were formerly (before 1 July 1977) part of one of the philosophical faculties:

  • Departments at the Faculty of Humanities
  • Departments at the Faculty of Science (Departments previously belonging to the IT faculty, Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Department of Applied Information Technology are not included)
  • Departments at the School of Business, Economics and Law
  • The following departments at the Faculty of Social Sciences: Department of Psychology, Department of Sociology and Work Science, Department of Political Science and Department of Global Studies
  • For the Faculty of Education, students are included in, for example, the subject of pedagogy (Teacher education is not included)

The Donation Board Scholarships

This scholarship is for those who are in financial need (yearly income below 229 200 SEK in 2024) and studying at a department that belongs to "Faculty of Philosophy". The scholarship amount is 10,000 SEK or as specified by special regulations.

The Henrik E Ahrenberg Foundation

This foundation awards scholarships for travel within the Nordic countries for students at first-, second- and third-cycle level. The aim is to provide students at the University of Gothenburg the opportunity to study at, in addition to Gothenburg, other Nordic universities, Nordic archives, libraries, museums, or similar institutions. The scholarship amount is a maximum of 15,000 SEK per student.

Special grants from Berghaus

Grants can be applied for student activities and projects within a "Faculty of Philosophy" at the University of Gothenburg, such as student revues, choir activities, theatre productions, and journals. Grants are not given for projects that only concern an individual student, studies/thesis writing, or conferences.
